What about the age of the pet? Nothing says that all families should start with a puppy or kitten. Many families do quite well with adult dogs or cats. If you do want a younger pet, look for one at least eight weeks old. Pups and kittens should nurse for approximately six weeks to derive the benefits of natural protection from the antibodies in their mother’s milk. That allows two weeks for weaning before they are separated from their loving food source.
Waiting until the pet is a couple of months old also provides time for in-litter socialization, which may have an effect on the pet’s personality. Some people prefer to let the dog or cat get quite a bit older before taking him into their family. Lots of pet lovers would rather start with an older pet, one that is already housebroken and perhaps a little calmer.
