Wise parents will look beyond the happy anticipation of a child’s joy and excitement at greeting a new puppy or kitten and consider whether the circumstances in their household will promote the long-term enjoyment of a family pet. Animal relinquishment, abandonment, and euthanasia are, unfortunately, prevalent in the United States.
