First, for the pet, it’s not fair to contain an energetic, seventy-pound golden retriever in a postage stamp-size yard. Large dogs, especially more athletic breeds, need room to run. Even if you plan to provide the dog with an intense, organized exercise regimen, he still needs a little room to stretch between workouts.

So take a good look at your backyard before pet shopping. Is there enough room for a large breed dog or should you put a smaller breed at the top of your shopping list? How about your own considerations; can you stand the cleanup detail necessary to keep a large dog in a small yard? And what about your neighbor?
