Only so much can be learned from an external physical examination, so your veterinarian may perform other tests.

She will check the pet’s stool for intestinal parasites. (If you bring in a stool sample in a plastic bag, this endeavor will be a little less pleasant for you, but a lot more pleasant for your pet.) He will also perform blood tests, checking the dog’s blood for heartworms and tick-borne diseases.
