Unanticipated Responsibilities (1/2)

You may think you know full well what pet care responsibilities lay ahead of you, but there may be a surprise lurking just around the corner. Pets are unpredictable and accidents do happen. So it’s best to anticipate some of the more common emergency-room situations. Children and pets interacting together are an accident waiting to happen. Cats will try to climb too high and fall down. Puppies will rush out the back door behind a child and get crunched in the process. Children will accidentally stick their fingers into wide-open dog and cat eyes. What do you do when the unexpected occurs? Is there a pet 911? Actually, there is a pet emergency number-you just need to find out what it is.

Ask your veterinarian what to do in case of an emergency. Does he handle his own emergency calls? Does he refer them to a twenty-four-hour emergency hospital? If your veterinarian assigns after-hours call to another facility, where is it?
