Sometimes, very young children fair better with midsize dogs. Medium-size dogs are often the “happy medium.” The dog is not big enough to cause “casual harm,” the type of harm that can occur when the full-grown Rhodesian ridgeback on his way to the food bowl accidentally bumps into a small child.

And a midsize dog is not as apt to be injured by a rambunctious toddler either.
