Remember that punishing dogs after the fact for housebreaking accidents (or for anything else) has no effect except to confuse them and make them afraid of you. Don’t fall for the old “rub their nose in it” advice. Also, resist the urge to scoop up a puppy “in the act” and rush him out the back door to finish his job.

Going outside should never be punishment; it should always be a positive experience. If you catch your pup in the act of an inappropriate elimination, put him in time-out.
