Exercise is always the first component in a fitness plan, whether for humans or animals. In surveying your family, assess, the time you have available to exercise-yourself and the dog. While you’re at it, assess your physical ability to exercise with your dog. Can you keep up with a long-legged greyhound or should you opt for a breed with a little less zip? Dogs living outside can exercise without their owners if they are so inclined, but even outside dogs in large yards need us to motivate them.

Even the most energetic, bird-chasing dog will rarely exercise enough on his own. Bird chasing may get boring and the shady spot under the elm tree may be a little too enticing.
