Once the dog or cat is thoroughly wet, lather the waterlogged pet with shampoo, getting the suds all the way to the skin. Avoid getting shampoo in the pet’s eyes. Shampoo in the eyes is uncomfortable and can even cause eye injuries such as corneal abrasions. Prior to the bath, you may want to apply mineral oil or ophthalmic ointment to protect the eyes, especially if you have a brachycephalic (short-nosed) pet such as a Pekingese or bulldog or a Persian cat.
