Rabbits and other small exotic pets can also be unintentionally harmed by young children who “hug too hard.” Rabbits are especially prone to injury at the hands of exuberant children. Children try to hold on tight when hugging soft bunnies. When the bunny grows tired of snuggling it may struggle to get free. As he pushes against the child with those powerful rear legs, the bunny may break his own back. This can be a fatal injury.

Children that own rabbits should be mature enough to understand the safe handling of their pets and to accept that most rabbits do not enjoy being held. An alternative pet may be a good choice when space is an issue.
