Not all couples already have a pet before children arrive in the home. Sometimes the issue of acquiring a pet doesn’t even arise until your child announces that he or she just has to have a cat, dog, or some other pet. Perhaps you also long for a dog or cat like the one you had when you were about your child’s age. Or you’ve been reading or talking to friends and it seems that “everyone” believes that kids and pets just go together.

Many magazine and Internet articles tout the developmental benefits of pets for children. You don’t want your child to miss out, do you? Children are always faced with peer pressure, and it is certainly true that children without pets may find themselves different in that respect from many of their peers.
